Turnovers, bad shooting cost Slovenia against Macedonia

Hello World!

In a physical and competitive EuroBasket 2011 second round matchup  Saturday F.Y.R. of Macedonia defeated Goran Dragic and Slovenia 68-59 from the Vilnius Arena in Vilnius, Lithuania behind 19 big points from their leading scorer Bo McCalebb and 14 from combo guard Vlado Ilievski.

Slovenia turned the ball over a costly 16 times while shooting just 40% from the floor and an awful 17.4% on 4-of-23 shots from deep.

Dragic led all scorers with 20 on 8-of-13 shooting, however he contributed six of his team’s 16 total turnovers on the night.

In fact Slovenia’s struggles with the ball started early as they successfully coughed it up five times in the first quarter allowing Macedonia to run out to an early 7-0 lead to start the game.

Dragic was a much needed offensive spark early though as he single-handedly brought the Slovenian National Team back by scoring their first 11 points.

Unfortunately turnovers at pivotal points throughout the contest proved too much to overcome as Macedonia capitalized on each and every Slovenian mishap on the other end.

Off Slovenia’s five first quarter turns Macedonia scored 11 key points.  Conversely, with momentum on their side they would close out the half on a devastating run pushing the score to 39-31 behind 12 first half points by McCalebb.

Dragic, although he scored Slovenia’s first 11 points, was not heard from again until he hit a three-pointer at the 2:29 minute mark of the third quarter.  At that point Macedonia’s lead had ballooned to 10 points – Dragic’s three cutting it to seven as the two teams headed into the fourth quarter of play.

Led by the scoring of Ilievski and McCalebb, Macedonia would open up a sizeable 17-point gap in the final period, however behind Dragic’s fiery play late Slovenia would mount a respectable comeback closing the margin to just six on a 13-2 run with a minute and 25 seconds remaining in the game.

Unfortunately Slovenia’s attempt at a miraculous rally would stall as a pivotal turnover by Dragic and subsequent free throws by Macedonia would end any all hopes of a comeback in this EuroBasket 2011 second round affair.

Next up for Slovenia is Finland on Monday September 12th.  Finland ousted Georgia with a 87-73 victory Saturday.

F.Y.R. of Macedonia gets set to face Russia who has not yet lost in EuroBasket 2011.  That contest is also scheduled for Monday September 12th.
