Orlando Summer League: Sullinger, Jones III shine in NBA debuts

Hello World!

Jared Sullinger dropped a game-high 20 points for the victorious Boston Celtics while Thunder forward Perry Jones III demonstrated his versatile skill set scoring 16 to go along with 8 rebounds as the Celtics beat the Thunder 73-65 in Game 2 of Monday’s Summer League action from Orlando, Florida.

2012 NBA Draft

Both collegiate stars curiously dropped in the 2012 NBA draft albeit their well-documented successes with Sullinger falling to the mighty Boston Celtics at No. 21 and Jones sticking with the Thunder at No. 28.

However, as showcased in their NBA debuts Monday afternoon, these two forgotten forwards may rival for the biggest steals of the draft by season’s end.

Sullinger, who came off the bench Monday, knocked in 6-of-12 shots from the field netting all seven of his free throw attempts while hitting a three-pointer and hauling down six big rebounds for the Celtics.

Jones was not much worse, scoring 16 points on 7-of-17 shots while snatching eight rebounds and a blocked shot.

Both players successfully played to their strengths in this their first real taste of NBA ball.

Jones starting transition opportunities by grabbing defensive rebounds and Sullinger showcasing a refined post skill set.

While Sullinger proved he could indeed hit pick-and-pop jumpers with relative ease, Jones displayed a very natural ability to make plays on the break and in the halfcourt set.

Fab Melo, Boston’s 22nd pick in the 2012 Draft, scored 2 points in just 14 minutes of play.  He also added 2 rebounds and 2 blocks in a winning effort while small forward Kris Joseph, the Celtics’ 51st overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, tallied 7 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

The Thunder were led by second-year man Reggie Jackson‘s 19 points.
