Grizzlies win first playoff game; Zach Randolph gets paid

I guess in order to get yourself a contract extension in Memphis these days all you have to do is get a win in the playoffs. Now obviously that’s not all that went into Zach Randolph‘s interestingly timed 4-year, $71 million dollar contract extension agreed upon just hours after the Memphis Grizzlies upset the San Antonio Spurs 101-98 in Game 1 of their Western Conference first round series matchup. However, on the surface the victory over the … Read entire article »

Bulls defense stifle Celtics backcourt in Eastern Conference playoff preview

Believe it or not there’s much more to the Chicago Bulls story this season than Derrick Rose’s MVP chances. Thursday night in a prime-time matchup with the reigning Eastern Conference Champion Boston Celtics, the Bulls showed the TNT viewing audience that as a unit they can play defense with the best of them; putting  in an impressive defensively-charged 97-81 victory in front of 23,067 Chicago faithful. Challenging entry passes and shadowing the Celtics perimeter players relentlessly those surprising Bulls sent a clear message to the rest of the league that defense predicates everything they do. That aforementioned Bulls’ defense stifled the Celtics All-Star backcourt of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo into a horribly cold 12-of-34 shooting night, ultimately holding the Celtics as a team to just 38.4% shooting from the field. Allen, … Read entire article »

You dare go under the screen against….Rondo?

Rajon Rondo is not necessarily known for his jumpshot making prowess at this stage in his early NBA career, however in the Celtics impressive 107-97 road victory over the league-leading Spurs Thursday night the reluctant outside shooting Celtics’ point guard successfully converted an impressive six out of nine attempts from mid-range. Big deal you say? For a player who almost habitually gets the “once he gets a jumper he’ll be unstoppable” mantra  attached to his name every time mentioned, yes Rondo consistently knocking down jumpers and looking confident doing it is a very big deal. Especially to the fans in Boston. Thursday night Spurs’ Head Coach Gregg Popovich did what any self-respecting NBA coach would have done when faced with the mighty Boston Celtics – he chose to go under screens when attempting to … Read entire article »

JaVale McGee post rare 11-point, 12-rebound, 12-block triple-double in loss to Bulls

Washington Wizards’ starting center JaVale McGee posted a rare 11-point, 12-rebound, 12-block triple-double in a 98-79 loss to the Bulls Tuesday night from the United Center in downtown Chicago, Illinois. His 12 block total was the most by a player in an NBA game since Keon Clark of the Toronto Raptors sent away 12 shots almost to the day, a decade ago on March 23, 2001. Stoudemire’s late block keys Knicks comeback victory over Heat

These guys weren’t supposed to be able to play defense, right?  Amare Stoudemire and New York Knicks’ newly-acquired All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony may not be known around the league for their prowess on the defensive side of the ball, but all it took was one key play in the closing moments of New York’s impressive 91-86 come-from-behind victory over the confident Heat Sunday night to dispel what we thought we knew about the other Eastern Conference new 3-man super group. The Heat looked confident and in control early boosting their lead to as many as 15 points in the first half of play only to let Carmelo Anthony will his new squad back to a one-point lead at halftime after assisting Knicks’ reserve forward Bill Walker on a miraculous buzzer-beating 3-point … Read entire article »

Dwight Howard powers his way to 40 points and 15 rebounds, Magic dominate Thunder

Dwight Howard powers his way to 40 points and 15 rebounds, Magic dominate Thunder

Dwight Howard didn’t mince words when speaking about his team’s lackluster effort after a 111-105 home loss to the lowly Sacramento Kings this past Wednesday night; and after Friday’s monster effort against the Thunder, he did more than his fair share of backing those harsh words up with his play. Howard overpowered the smaller Thunder – playing without newly acquired center Kendrick Perkins – to the tune of 40 points, 15 rebounds, 2 steals and 6 … Read entire article »
